Who is Susi Hately Aldous?
Shortly after I graduated with my BSc. Kinesiology from University of Victoria, I worked in a multi-disciplinary rehabilitation center in Vancouver, BC where I designed exercise programs for people with chronic pain. In the same time frame, I had my own bout of chronic pain from "going for it" in every activity I did throughout my teenage years- whether running, cycling, swimming, rowing or skiing. In my twenties the injuries caught up and I was hurting. That is when a friend suggested I try yoga.
The benefit was almost immediate. For 2 years I couldn't run, swim or bike without pain and after practicing yoga weekly for 4 months, I was able to run the 10K Vancouver Sun Run, pain free.
II started to apply what I was learning in class with the clients at the rehabilitation center. They began to get better faster when combined with traditional rehabilitation and exercise therapy.
When I moved from Vancouver to Calgary I focused more on ergonomics, assessing work stations for employees with carpal tunnel syndrome, shoulder or neck pain. I also became certified to teach yoga from the Yoga Studio in Calgary and from Kabir Baug in Pune, India.
Today I combine the practicality and science of ergonomics with the art of yoga.
You can have $1500 chair, but if you don't know how to use it, it won't help your back. If you don't know how to stretch, breathe, or take breaks throughout the day, it will much harder to relieve neck or shoulder pain, or handle the stressful curve balls that can occur day-to-day.
It only takes 2 minutes. It really is a matter of only 2 minutes. Clients and students tell me that when they take 2 minutes every so often through their day - 2 minutes to breathe, stretch, meditate, drink a glass of water - they are less irritable, more calm, have less pain and the interruptions and distractions just don't impact them as much. Better yet, they feel much more productive and are more able to leave "work at work", and "be present" at home.
I hope you find this site a valuable resource for having less pain, less strain, more clarity and calmness while at work.
